“To finish our conversation.” It was so hard to snatch

moments alone together. I stopped fiddling with the stones.

“Dinner was exasperating.”

nightgown. I’d always thought Victorian clothes were

romantic, but wearing them now, I’d kill for some twenty-

first-century boxers and a T-shirt.

Evan raked a hand through his hair. “There’s so much

we need to figure out. Like your ring. How does Toria have

it?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea.”

“Was it a gift?”

“Yes.” My voice sounded so calm. So detached from the

emotions inside me.

“Who gave it to you?”

“My father.” The two words singed my throat.

“Family heirloom?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean?”

“I never met my dad or his family.” That simple fact

had shaped my childhood. I had been the girl without a

dad. Not even a part-time dad. Mom tried to be there. My

grandparents did everything they could to distract me from

the void, but it remained—the space my father never

wanted to fill in my life.

“I don’t mean to bring up the past, but your ring may

be related to our time travel.” He sounded so scientific,

dissecting my existence.

“Evan, I get it.” I watched the candles’ flames convulse

around the wicks as I tried to control the emotions rising up in me.

“Is Preston your dad’s last name?”

“My mom’s.” She didn’t want me to have his name.

Not after he left us. I was hers. Not his.

He waited for an explanation.

My chest constricted. Ghosts, time-travel, our
